Review: Well it was a book of poems written by Charles Bukowski from 1974-1977, when he was around 55.
Henry Charles Bukowski (August 16, 1920 – March 9, 1994) was a German American poet, novelist, and short story writer. Bukowski’s writing was heavily influenced by the geography and atmosphere of his home city of Los Angeles, and is marked by an emphasis on the ordinary lives of poor Americans, the act of writing, alcohol, relationships with women, and the drudgery of work. A prolific author, Bukowski wrote thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories, and six novels, eventually having over 60 books in print. In 1986 Time called Bukowski a “laureate of American lowlife”

His poetry was very raw, profligate, licentious, at times crude and lewd. Most of his poems had to do with the “whores” he sleeps with. Yes, like prostitutes and strippers. He was also an alcoholic who dabbled in illicit drugs. His poems talk about his endless consumption of alcohol, mostly beer. In some of his poems he does say he has to give up his voluptuary ways and find a nice woman and stop drinking. His poems are visceral and very blunt and honest. I read all 307 pages in like one day. I had heard that he was a popular writer in America so I wanted to know what he was all about. He has a legion of fans. In one poem he writes that he keeps his number and address listed and his fans do call him, they even proposition him for sex, which he takes. lol. He’s also an artist, a painter. He doesn’t live in affluence. In fact through his poems you imagine he lives close to squalor. He talks about the cockroaches that permeate his place. It’s about the harsh realities of living in near squalor and poverty in a rough part of Los Angeles as a sex addict and alcoholic. I can understand why his fans adore him, because he’s very honest. Also he’s like 55 when he wrote these poems. He died in 1994 at the age of 73. He’s a horny, drunkard old man. He also has a thing for redheads. Those were his favorites
I give this book of poetry 3 out of 5 stars. I don’t rate it very high because his poetry isn’t exactly the kind of poetry I like. But if you want to read honest poetry about the life of a profligate, lewd, crude, raw, alcoholic man, then you’ll like this book of poems. Here’s the poem “Love is a Dog from Hell” which is the title of the book. It pretty much sets the theme/motifs of the entire book.

Greatings, Can i take a one small pic from your blog?
Which pic?
Yes, that style of writing may not be the most appealing, especially to those of a softer nature. Fact is lots of men think about sex, drugs and the next conquest all the time.
You’re probably right. Men do think differently from women a lot of the time. Thanks for the insight.
My son told me to check out your blog and I must say I’m impressed, very helpful.
Thank you for stopping by
Bukowski is a fantastic author. ive read about 3 of his books and not one of them has let me down. In fact, once Ive started reading I havent been able to put the book down!

I’ve heard a lot of great reviews about him. My friends have raved about him. I’m going to read one of his prose books next. I think I’ll like it better than his poetry
His book are all very graphic and controversial but his style of writing is unique and addictive. I have read a few of his books and cant get enough of them!

“Graphic and controversial.” Definitely. My friends have told me that his prose books are even better. I plan to read one soon.
Hey, Im also a big fan of his books! They say a lot of his writing is based on his own experiences. According to Wikipedia he had numerous affiars and one night stands throughout his life. That probably explains how he was able to write so graphically…!

Yes, he led quite a dissolute life and he wrote about it quite frankly. That’s one of the reasons why his fans love him so
Nice poem.
I think I will try to find it in Danish, so I am sure, I have understood it all correctly.

Thanks. I heard his novels are even better. I hope you can find them in Danish. He’s a famous author, so I think you shouldn’t have a problem
His novels are absolutely the best! He has a magic that intertwines the characters very well. He also paints a great depiction of what some circles of social life in Los Angeles must be like. Please comment back if you find the book in Danish…he was German-American so chances are the book may have been translated to German as well wlthough I really doubt a translation could have the same impact!

Yes, I plan on reading his novels in the future. I tried to do a google search for a Danish translation of “Love is a Dog From Hell” but couldn’t find anything. Maybe you can ask your local bookstore if there is one. He’s such a prolific and famous author that I would think there is a Danish translation. Next time I’m in my bookstore, I’ll ask them about it
Hey Emma, just wanted to follow up this post by saying that I went to my local book store and found some of his work available in Spanish (I had to order it in as Spanish is my second language!). I’ll let you know what I make of it…Im sure if nothing else I’ll learn some “interesting” spanish words…

That’s wonderful
I studied Spanish for six years. I’m part Spanish too. Como estas? Espero que os guste el libro!
Hey Emma, just thought Id post again to say that I’m half way through reading Ham on Rye – another of Bukowski’s books. This ones a little different though because the setting is him as a child…not an adult..good read so far :-)
.-= Snake Eyes Costumes´s last blog ..Childs Snake Eyes Costumes =-.
That’s awesome! I’m glad you’re enjoying the book. I’ve been meaning to read some of his novels. I’ll add Ham on Rye to my TBR (To be Read) list.
the last poem in the book,”one for the shoeshine man”, i really think is in a sense what bukowki is all about. He shows you life..RAW and dark as it can be but hope is in there to in the little things. i can drink to that
Yah, Bukowski is definitely raw and blunt. I look forward to reading his novels
Help interpreting this Bukowski quote?…
Its from Factotum, chapter 56. The narrator says “For each Joan of Arc there is a Hitler perched at the other end of the teeter-totter. The old story of good and evil. But none of the bus drivers ever dumped us. They were thinking instead of car payme…
I’m not very good at interpreting Bukowski poems. I think it’s as you said that there exists good and evil in this world. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
